Barcode, QR and Data Matrix Scanners

Modern code scanners are used not only in retail and warehouse operations, but also in manufacturing automation systems. The equipment is designed for reading linear 1D barcodes, QR codes, Data Matrix, GS1 DataMatrix and other 2D markings, as well as for automatic product identification at workstations and production lines.

The Vostok-IT catalog includes handheld, wireless, rugged industrial and fixed barcode scanners for retail, warehouse logistics and manufacturing applications. Equipment selection depends on the code type and size, marking technology, reading distance, product movement speed, surface material and operating conditions.

Data Matrix and QR Code Scanners

Data Matrix and QR codes are read using 2D image based scanners that capture the marking and decode the information contained in it. Such devices are widely used for product identification, serial numbers, batch numbers, packaging identification and other operational data capture tasks.

Data Matrix allows a significant amount of information to be encoded within a compact area. For this reason, the technology is widely used for serialized product marking, traceability, digital product passports, mandatory marking systems and other automatic identification applications.

When selecting a Data Matrix scanner, it is important to consider more than declared support for this code type. Reading stability depends on the physical code size, module size, print quality, contrast, packaging color and material, reflections, reading distance and reading angle.

Fixed Industrial Barcode Scanners

Fixed industrial barcode scanners are used for automatic code reading on conveyors and production lines. Unlike handheld devices, such readers can operate without direct operator involvement and automatically transfer decoded information to software or industrial control systems.

Fixed scanners can be used for product identification, serial number registration, production process control, marking verification, sorting, packaging, order completion and creation of a complete movement history for each individual product.

Industrial models may support Ethernet, PROFINET, EtherNet/IP, RS-232 and other interfaces for integration with PLC systems, conveyor systems, automated workstations and enterprise information systems.

DPM Code Reading

DPM Direct Part Marking is used when an identification code is applied directly to the surface of a component or product. The marking can be created by laser, dot peen, engraving or other permanent marking technologies.

Reading DPM codes is usually more challenging than reading a standard barcode printed on a label. Performance can be affected by surface material, light reflection, texture, marking depth, contrast and part geometry. Such applications require specialized industrial scanners with suitable optics, illumination and image processing algorithms.

Scanners for Retail, Warehouses and Logistics

Handheld wired and wireless 1D and 2D scanners are commonly used at retail and warehouse workstations. They can support goods receiving, order picking, inventory operations, internal movements, shipment control and barcode reading directly at the point of sale.

Warehouse logistics applications can also use rugged industrial scanners and compact ring scanners that allow employees to perform operations while keeping both hands free.

Data Matrix Scanners for E-Excise and Digital Marking

In e-excise and digital marking systems, reliable Data Matrix reading is important at every stage of product movement. Scanning equipment can be used directly on the production line, in warehouses, throughout logistics operations and at retail locations.

The operating conditions at these stages are very different. A production line may require a fixed industrial reader with automatic triggering and integration with a control system, while a retail store may require a convenient handheld or presentation 2D scanner for fast code reading by an operator or cashier.

How to Select a Barcode Scanner

When selecting scanning equipment, the following parameters should be considered:

  • code types: 1D, QR, Data Matrix, GS1 DataMatrix and DPM;
  • code size and minimum module size;
  • marking quality and marking technology;
  • surface material and geometry;
  • working distance and required field of view;
  • manual or automatic operation;
  • product movement speed;
  • lighting conditions and reflective surfaces;
  • required enclosure protection rating;
  • communication interfaces and software integration requirements.

The same 2D scanner may read a large Data Matrix printed on a high quality label very reliably while performing significantly worse with a small code applied to a reflective, curved or uneven surface. For manufacturing applications, equipment selection should therefore be based on preliminary testing whenever possible.

Scanner Selection and Testing

Preliminary research, solution concept development, testing and modeling are an important part of Vostok-IT automation projects. These activities make it possible to validate a technical solution before equipment procurement and reduce risks during subsequent implementation.

Upon request from the customer, Vostok-IT specialists can test scanners using real products, packaging, labels or directly applied markings.

Testing may include evaluation of:

  • code reading speed and stability;
  • minimum reliably readable code size;
  • working distance;
  • acceptable reading angles;
  • the impact of glare and surface material;
  • print or marking quality;
  • performance with moving products;
  • operator convenience and ergonomics.

Based on the test results, a recommended scanner model, installation conditions and possible integration architecture can be defined.

Scanner Integration into Automation Systems

A scanner is only one component of an automatic identification system. The decoded identifier can be automatically used by software to register goods receiving, production operations, internal movement, packaging, picking or shipment.

Vostok-IT integrates barcode scanners with automated workstations, operational accounting and traceability systems, industrial controllers, conveyors, weighing equipment, RFID and other automatic identification technologies.

A comprehensive approach makes it possible to use a barcode, QR code or Data Matrix not simply as a number, but as an identifier linking a physical product with its complete history in the enterprise information system.

Barcode Scanner or Machine Vision System

If the task is limited to reading an identification code, a properly selected industrial barcode scanner is usually sufficient. If the system also needs to verify object position, check marking quality, detect packaging elements, recognize text or perform visual product inspection, a machine vision system may be required.

Vostok-IT specialists can help determine the most suitable equipment architecture based on the conditions of a specific workstation, required reading speed and reliability, and further integration with the enterprise automation system.
